Sidesaddle "Saratoga Gap" (Faultline Records, 1985) (LP)

The Sidesaddle band had been playing together since at least since 1979 before recording this first album... It's a pretty solid set of traditional and semi-progressive bluegrass, including covers of country songs such as Willie Nelson's "Crazy" and Rodney Crowell's "Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight," as well as bluegrass oldies from Lester Flatt, Bill Monroe and Kenny Baker. Also included are three original tunes, two from mandolinist Kim Elking, bassist Karen Quick's "A Stranger Kept Me Warm Last Night," which sounds like a good, old-fashioned cheating song, but has a nice country twist. Overall, a strong album which locals will remember fondly. Plus, it has the seal of approval (ort! ort!) from DJ "Cuzen" Al Knoth, who I remember from a bazillion years ago as the host of KFAT-FM's Sunday morning bluegrass show.
